How to Developing An iOS App in Xcode?

Here is a step-to-step tutorial for developing iPhone apps in Xcode. The guidelines illustrated here suggests a step-by-step method to create your app using Xcode interface.
With the advent of mobile app development there are now a lot of tools and platforms you can use to develop a mobile app. Xcode is one such software used by many of the best mobile app development companies for iOS app development.
- Download Xcode7 from Mac App Store.
- You can download the Xcode manually by going to Apple Developer Page for Xcode.
Over here, we shall be using XCode7 Interface for our pedagogy.
The diagram shown above refers you the different sections of the interface namely Navigator, Editor, Debug Area and Utility Area. The size of these panels can be changed by hovering the cursor over the boundaries of each area and dragging.
You can also display and hide the various areas as required by using “View” buttons in the upper right-hand corner.
Protecting the debugger area or utility area can be useful when you are writing code so that you can have more editor space.
In this pane, there are three navigators such as Project, Search, and Issue navigators that are used to switch between using the Navigator Selector Bar.
It displays all the files associated with your project.
- You can create “Groups” to organize your files in using project navigator.
- Right-click and select Create Group for creating agroup. It doesn’t create a folder in the file system wherein it exists in your Xcode project.
- Create actual directories on your hard drive, organize the files, and drag them into the Xcode project.
- Right-click on the project navigator and create new files or add existing files to your project. Or you can directly drag folders or files from your system, and a popup dialog box shall ask you if you want to add the libraries.
- If you click on a file in theproject navigator, you can see the file content displayed in the editor area. If you double-click the file, a new window pop-up which can be useful when you have two monitors.
- If you click the root node of the project navigator, the project properties will be open in the editor area.
You can search pieces of text in your project by using search navigator tab.
You can use search pilot when you are looking for particular property, method, or variable which are difficult to remember.
Issue Navigator will notify all the problems in your app.
After you build and compile your application, the Xcode cannot make your app and halt it if there are any issues in your app. You can click on an error marked in red color, and it will show you the file and line it’s failing at in the editor area.
You will be probably spending more time in this area where all coding happens.
Navigation within the editor area
Back and Forward arrows contained in the upper left corner of the editor area are similar to the back and forward buttons on your browser, and they help you to navigate to previously viewed files.
Another way of navigation is by using Jump Bar as depicted in the figure below. The jump bar allows you to drill quickly down through the required groups and files. When you click on it, it will open a menu with other groups in hierarchy level.
If you click the tail portion of the jump bar, a menu will show you all the methods you can implement within the file which are not useful to jump to another area within the archive. But it will show you at a glimpse the methods available in the file.
Types of Editor Views
The editor comes with three unique view boxes that can be toggled between with the set of three buttons in the upper right-hand corner.
- It is the single editor pane view which is suitable for small laptop screen if you don’t have an external monitor.
The Xcodeservice area comprises two panes namely inspector pane and library pane.
The Inspector pane will give you the details about the files which are highlighted in your project navigator.
You can drag UI elements from the library pane onto editor area to add that element to your UI.
This area shows you the console output and state of various variables when you run your application.
Click on the menu entry Window->Organizer to open the Xcode Organizer.
Your provisioning profiles can be managed on your system and various devices. This option is necessary for deploying your app on actual physical iOS devices.
Xcode provides you an incredible iOS simulator for you to test your application. You can use this tool for most of your development and then find a device to test.
